In Coconut Grove, sunset behaves a little differently than it does on the open beach. The light arrives filtered through canopy, the bay glows to the east while the sun drops behind the trees to the west, and the magic hour feels softer and longer. Plan around it and the evening unfolds beautifully. Here is how we time it.

Understand the setting

The Grove sits on Biscayne Bay, so the water catches morning light, while sunset color builds inland to the west. Under the tree canopy, direct sun fades earlier than the posted time, which actually helps: you get gentle, even light for portraits well before the official sunset.

These are rough guides for the Miami area; confirm the exact time for your date, and remember Daylight Saving Time shifts the clock about an hour from mid-March to early November. January around 5:50 PM, February around 6:10 PM, March around 6:25 PM (then 7:25 PM after the clocks change), April around 7:45 PM, May around 8:00 PM, June around 8:15 PM, July around 8:15 PM, August around 7:55 PM, September around 7:25 PM, October around 6:55 PM, November around 5:40 PM, and December around 5:30 PM.

How to build the timeline

Aim for the ceremony to end thirty to sixty minutes before sunset, leave a protected fifteen to thirty minutes for couple portraits, and let dinner begin as the canopy lights warm up. Because the trees soften the light early, you have a little more flexibility here than on the beach.

A note for film

The minutes after sunset are gold for video in the Grove: string lights flicker on in the branches, the sky deepens, and the whole estate takes on a glow. We often capture a few quiet motion frames in that blue-hour window once the stills are done.
